First Week - Getting Acquainted and Getting Started!

Grade 9 is off and running! After two days of getting organized, easing into school, and building/re-establishing relationships, we hit the ground running on Wednesday

First, we looked ahead and inquired into the themes and sub-themes of grade 9 social studies:

Then, we thought about reading and stories and books, working collaboratively to deepen our thinking and share our ideas with others:

To set the foundation for grade 9 ELA, students have been developing their literary analysis toolboxes. By exploring some short texts together and talking about how to identify and consider intentional choices made by text creators (authors, filmmakers, etc.), students should feel confident in going forward and analyzing texts on their own throughout the year.

Literature appreciation is an essential component of the English Language Arts curriculum, and for many, life! The Program of Studies insists students explore and analyze a variety of texts, not just written pieces, so we began our LITSPIRATION inquiry this year with a short film, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. (This is also a picture book, but for once, the movie is better!) This short film is a beautiful examination into how the act of reading is not just important, but essential to a full life. Students worked on a simple assignment attached to this short film in order to give me a first look and basic understanding of their analysis abilities.

A wonderful scene from the short film, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.
